The background of this illustration shows a picture of the superconducting electron accelerator at the European XFEL. The overlaid pics are processed images of two diffraction patterns from microjets containing protein crystals. The blue circle is the diffuse scattering from the water in the jet, and the yellow dots are Bragg diffraction peaks produced by the crystals. These two diffraction images were recorded with consecutive XFEL pulses, 886 nanoseconds apart.
